Two years sometimes seems like just yesterday and other times it seems like a long time ago. I still think of Dad often but as the second anniversary of his passing approached I felt I needed to do something special in his memory - mostly for me, but I hope others will appreciate it too. Like last year, this is a musical endeavor derived from a composition by Dad's mother, Isobel Wilkie.
This piece, entitled "Air" in the 1987 published manuscript, was originally, more poetically entitled "Melody for the Hills" in the original manuscript that Isobel presented to Dad on his birthday in 1976. The melody is lovely but I felt that I could do more with it than simply play it as she scored it for the piano. So I decided to orchestrate the piece in an attempt to bring the listener a little closer to the majesty of the Scottish hills. I wish Dad, and Isobel, could hear it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
