Time Lapse Christmas Day

Christmas day with the Wall-Bonds. (Click here for a larger, higher-res version.)

Christmas Day 2008 from Gregory Bond on Vimeo.

Christmas at home in Hoboken

After an exciting "sleep" countdown Pierce was thrilled for the big day to finally arrive! We enjoyed a relaxed day at home watching an eclectic assortment of old movies: Monty Python's The Holy Grail (a big Pierce fav), Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Pierce was thrilled with all of his presents and added some new stuffed animals to his burgeoning and unusual collection: an Ostrich and a Chinchilla. We enjoyed a breakfast of scrambled eggs with latkes topped with sour cream and caviar and Mimosas. Breakfast was inspired by my favourite Brooklyn based cooking blog Smitten Kitchen. As most of you know when I'm not knitting I'm cooking and Smitten Kitchen is a great source of inspiration and competition much to Greg's delight! Enjoy the photo album and don't miss the rubber chicken (I'm not kidding). Click on the photo for more.

Christmas Eve at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church

Once again we attended the always charming and somewhat raucous Children's Christmas Eve Service at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoboken. The children participate with a parade of instruments to the altar where they gather to hear the story of the birth of Jesus. The 135 year old organ is a treat to hear throughout the service. Every year here's always one child who has the parents suppressing peels of laughter and this year was no exception as a 4 year old boy had the Nativity sheep battle at the altar. Delightful!

Ravel's Paris

We spent a wintery afternoon at the second of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert series featuring Ravel's Paris. Once again we were entertained and educated with Delta David Grier as Conductor and Host. Ravel's "Dawn," Satie's "Gymnopedie No.1," and Stravinsky's "Infernal Dance of King Kashchei" were our favorite compositions of the afternoon. It was interesting to learn that the trombone glissando in the Stravinsky piece was revolutionary in serious music at the time. Pierce's pet Tarsier enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did! Who is Thelonius Monk?

The Lincoln Center's Jazz for Young People concert series began today at the Frederick P. Rose Hall in the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle. Wynton Marsalis hosted the exploration of Monk's music and idiosyncratic style with his terribly cool band. It was quite interactive as we learned about down-beats, syncopation and off-beats and the very playful Marsalis was happy to tease those who decided not to participate. The venue was wonderfully intimate and the band outstanding. "Stuffy Turkey" won as favourite Monk composition of the afternoon. To see more of our afternoon click on the photo.

Sing, Dance, Act!

Here's Pierce's theatre class performing selections from You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. The troupe also played their favourite theatre games including: the very noisy and high pitched animal choir and mirror game among others. As you can see in the photos the children were in in constant motion. As always we are in awe of the ability of the instructors at the Hoboken Children's Theatre to herd cats! Thanks Melissa and Chase. Click on the photo for more pix.

A Long Weekend in Chicago

We just got back from a great long weekend in Chicago. Very urban and very lively - and very windy too! It lives up to its name (in the meteorological sense). We visited the Field Museum of natural history, the Shedd Aquarium (where we got a "behind the scenes" tour), and "The Bean" (aka "Cloud Gate"). Click on the picture to see more pix.

Liberty State Park Field Trip

I joined Pierce's Grade 2 Class on their field trip to the Liberty State Park Interpretive Center in New Jersey along with his teacher Mrs. Kubinsky and another parent Barbara Bravo (Tori's mom). The children spent the morning making their own field guides to take on an exploration walk in the park. They identified the various local species of trees and plants including the Ginkgo Biloba tree a living fossil which dates from the Permian period 270 million years ago (needless to say Pierce's favourite). We had a perfect crisp Fall morning, a great view of the Statue of Liberty and thankfully a short and not too bumpy school bus ride! Click on the picture to view the album.

Bernstein's New York

The new season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert series at the Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall has begun! We loved the concerts so much last year we decided to subscribe this year so we wouldn't miss any as they always sell out. In addition to celebrating Bernstein's New York pieces from Aaron Copeland and George Gershwin were featured. We were also treated to Sebastian Currier's Microsymph (a five movement symphony squeezed into 10 minutes) which is brilliant!

Pierce's Birthday Week

Last Sunday marked the beginning of Pierce's "birthday week" with Pierce opening his present from us (Lego Mindstorms). Then on Monday (his actual "birth day") there was a party in Pierce's class at school, and today we had a party with 10 of his friends at the Bowl-Rite Lanes in Union City, NJ. Click on the image below for more photos. A happy 8th birthday for Pierce indeed!

Pierce and Ben Sleep-Over

Pierce and Ben had a sleep-over at Mom and Dad's when we were visiting a couple of weeks ago. Pierce was excited enough by the novelty of it that it warranted mention in his first week of school's "What I Did On My Summer Vacation" report. Here's his drawn recollection of that night. Note the light entering through the ajar door and the dark night on the other side of the bedroom wall. Click on the image to enlarge.

Hawk Walk

Pierce, Deirdre and I made our regular summer visit to the Pacific Northwest Raptor Center to see the flying demonstration but this time we decided to do the "Hawk Walk" following the demonstration. We had the opportunity to have "Anakin", a Coopers Hawk, land on our (gloved) hands and feed them a little meat.

Lego Photo Mashups

Lego photo mashups from Pierce with some help from Gimp and Google image search.

In this picture, the Bionicle Toa Nokama is chasing a Vahki swimmer in Ga-Metru, but Toa Nokama doesn't realize two more Vahki swimmers are right behind him!

In this picture we see astronauts who went to Europa and found life and a garden. Somehow the astronauts got the job of being the Europa garden police. It's a mystery how they got the job.

Here, humans search for life under the icy surface of Europa.

Continuing the Europa saga: Hydraxon used to be the leader of the Europa police but he became bad. With the help of an alien from Mars, Hydraxon enslaved two humans. Now Hydraxon is forcing the humans to open the trunks containing the secret crystals. Only humans can open the chests.

Prelude to a Marriage

After editing Pierce's Music Man video I realized that I had some video on the same tape that I had taken in the days leading up to Ciara and Randy's wedding last year. I can't even remember taking the video which is a little unnerving given that I didn't join in the festivities with nearly the same gusto that other guests did. Nevertheless, here's what I found, all 15 minutes of it. It's a nice complement to the pictures I posted last year (I remember taking those!).
