Deirdre and I stole away to see a recital by the
Tallis Scholars at the grand
St. Thomas Church in Manhattan. They performed brilliantly despite the periodic rumbling of the subway trains passing beneath the church. I was most intrigued by the music of two composers from the program:
Josquin de Prez (1450 - 1521) and
Jacobus Gallus (1550 - 1591). Gallus in particular played games with music I would never have imagined to occur so early in Western musical history.
