Pikachu vs. Croc

Pierce and I put together this little movie over the past few weekends. We used the usual tools I've mentioned in previous posts: iMovie, Anime Studio and GimpShop. Pierce sketched the story board below before we started shooting. We followed it precisely as you can see in the final movie.

Christmas Eve at St. Matthew Trinity

We took part in a delightful children's Christmas eve service at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran church in Hoboken, a lovely old church on Hudson St. The carols sounded great with the accompaniment of their organ that dates back to 1877!

Christmas Greetings!

We've had quite a few people ask us about this picture. We took it at summer's end at the newly renovated Liberty State Science Center in their 5-and-under play area (which we managed to get into). The mirrored hemispheres mounted on the wall caught our attention.

Another Concert at the Lincoln Center

It was a cool day in the city today as we took in the second Concert for Young People at the Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. As usual it was entertaining and educational for all of us.

Tallis Scholars at St Thomas Church

Deirdre and I stole away to see a recital by the Tallis Scholars at the grand St. Thomas Church in Manhattan. They performed brilliantly despite the periodic rumbling of the subway trains passing beneath the church. I was most intrigued by the music of two composers from the program: Josquin de Prez (1450 - 1521) and Jacobus Gallus (1550 - 1591). Gallus in particular played games with music I would never have imagined to occur so early in Western musical history.

Christmas is nigh so Pierce and Deirdre busied themselves decorating our (fake!) tree.

Santa Land at Macy's NYC

Pierce and his class visited Macy's Santa Land in NYC. Not surprisingly Macy's knows how to put together an awesome North Pole. Before the visit to Santa at the North Pole the children attended a charming Christmas Puppet theatre with a great singing trio- no shortage of great singers with the theatre strike on Broadway. Meeting Santa was quite amusing with Pierce and his good friend Jimi suddenly becoming shy! Happily for the parents it was very well organized chaos with 5 classes from the school in attendance. Good exhausting fun for everyone! Click on the photo below to see all the fun.

Monster X

This is a 40 second clip that Pierce and I put together to experiment with animating Pierce's drawings. Pierce has huge ambitions for his cartoon: space battles, alien battles, slapstick comedy.... we'll see how far we get. But in the meantime, I thought we should show what we've been able to accomplish to date. We scanned Pierce's drawings, cut them out with GimpShop, animated the results with Anime Studio and then added the sound and titles with iMovie.

Pierce at the Lincoln Center

Pierce, Deirdre and I attended a wonderful Young People's Concert presented by the New York Philharmonic at the Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. It was an educational, entertaining and stimulating event. We can't wait for the next one!

Trip to the City

We ambled over to the city (with the help of public transportation) to visit the Museum of Natural History today, a lovely Fall day.

Some Photos Retrieved from Mom and Dad's Archives

This summer I grabbed a selection of photos from Mom and Dad's albums. I scanned them this weeked and added captions based on the annotations on the backs of the photos when they were present, otherwise I guessed as best as I could. The motherlode of archives resides in slide format so next summer I intend to bring a slide scanner to the 'Ridge.

Vancouver Island Vacation 2007

Here are a selection of photos from our summer vacation to see my (Greg's) folks in Arbutus Ridge on Vancouver Island. In addition to staying with Mom and Dad and seeing Allison, Marianne and Ben, we took a 4 day side trip to Tofino on the West side of the island. We stayed in a nice beach-side cabin at the Ocean Village Beach Resort. Peter and Charlotte (from Belgium) were able to meet up with us in Tofino for a couple of days as part of their western-Canadian vacation. The raptor pictures were taken at the Pacific Northwest Raptors Visitor Center, a place we visit every summer to see the spectacular flying demonstrations.
